This tutorial is aimed at teaching undergraduate history students to identify primary sources.  Other students may find this information helpful, however, and are certainly invited to go through the tutorial as well.

After completing this tutorial, you will be able to:

  • Know the difference between a primary source and a secondary source
  • Describe at least three types of primary sources
  • Identify primary source material
  • Know why you should use primary source material in your work
  • Answer at least 8 out of the 10 quiz questions correctly

You can go through this tutorial in order or jump around -- it makes no difference.  There are no arrows, just the menu at the side of the page.  The highlighted box will tell you where you currently are.  You can take the quiz first to see what you know, or take it at the end to see what you have learned -- but definitely take the quiz.

Also, you will find that some pages have discussion questions at the bottom of the pages.  They are there to make you think about the topic a little more.  If you would like to discuss these questions, you can email me at stnelson@email.arizona.edu

Enjoy!
