Quick Tip: Saving PDF Files

Have you tried saving a PDF file from GPO Access but received an error message when you tried to open it?  If so, try the following:

A PDF file may open within your browser's window or as an external application.  If it opens within your browser's window, you can save the file by choosing "Save As" from the "File" menu of your browser.  It should automatically save as a PDF file.  If the "Save As" option does not appear, click on the PDF document in the browser then choose "Save As" from the "File" menu.

Now it gets tricky!  You cannot save an externally launched PDF file from Adobe Acrobat Reader; however, you may from Adobe Exchange.  You can still save the file, but you need to do it before you open the file or by returning to your browser after opening the file.

Here are two ways to save an externally launched PDF file:

  • Right-click on the PDF link (indicated by the circle below) and choose "Save link as" or "Save target as" from the menu that appears.

Example: To save a PDF right click on the PDF link.

  • Hold down the [Shift] key and left-click on the PDF link.

If the file name appears as waisgate.cgi, get-doc.cgi, or get-cfr.cgi (found in the Code of Federal Regulations) in the "Save As" dialogue box, you must rename the file with a .pdf extension.  Example: filename.pdf.  If you have already downloaded a PDF file as *.cgi, simply rename it as a *.pdf.

Remember to rename the file to a .pdf!

One final tip:  Remember where you save the file!
