Abstract:
This dataset is a comprehensive geographic database describing the geology of the Clifton-Morenci area. This dataset was created through the cooperation of the Arizona Geological Survey and Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to provide a GIS database describing the geology of the Clifton-Morenci area for use by the general public as well as for use by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc., the source of funding for this project, for research and exploration needs.
Supplemental_Information:
The Clifton-Morenci geology dataset is released as an Arizona Geological Survey Digital Information Series product.

Although no formal tests were performed, all attribution was tested for accuracy against the paper source maps from which it was digitized by direct visual comparison between the source maps and the digital dataset.

These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no formal tests were performed. Polygons are closed. Line geometry is topologically clean. Any arcs that do not end at node intersections represent features that require dangling arcs and are therefore correct.

1) Lines were digitized from four USGS topographic base maps using Arc/Info v.7.1.1 and a Calcomp Drawingboard II table digitizer. 2) Coverages were edited, edge-matched, and joined using ArcEdit. 3) Polygon and line coverages were added to ArcView v.3.2 as themes and attributed. 4) The digital map was edited for mistakes. Line and polygon errors were fixed.

1) The map projection grid used by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc., was transferred onto topographic basemaps. 2) A tic file containing 10 points located at map projection grid intersections around the edge of the Phelps Dodge digital dataset was generated (Arc/Info) for the dataset. 3) The autocad .DWG files with Phelps Dodge geologic lines and polygon data were opened as themes in ArcView using the Cad Reader extension. 4) These themes were exported as two shapefiles - one containing geologic lines, and the other geologic polygons (ArcView). 5) The lines shapefile was converted into an Arc/Info coverage using the 'shapearc' command. 6) The new coverage was used to build new polygon topology. Attribution of lines as contacts or faults was partially maintained from the original source(Arc/Info). 7) The Classify Polygon script was used to pull polygon attribution from the polygon shapefile created earlier and put this attribution into the new Morenci geology coverage (ArcView). This gave the coverage attributed polygons and lines with a tic file in the Morenci map projection grid coordinates. 8) The UTM coordinates of the Morenci grid system tics were measured from the topo maps and a new tic coverage was generated using these coordinates (Arc/Info). 9) The Morenci geology coverage was transformed from the Morenci tics to the UTM tics (ArcInfo), putting the Morenci geology linework into the UTM coordinate system to match the map projection used to digitized the rest of the map. 10) This process was repeated for the Morenci datasets containing mine waste dumps and mine pits.

Spatial uncertainty in location of a feature, in meters. For example, a value of 10 for a line feature indicates that the geologic entity represented by the line is within 10 meters of the mapped feature. The uncertainty must be greater than the numerical precision of the X,Y coordinates that locate a point (i.e. the accuracy cannot exceed the precision). This value determines the line style that represents the line by using standard solid, dashed and dotted lines. For most existing maps, this length will be based on standard map accuracy, i.e. the geologic entity is located within the width of the line shown on a map for a solid line. A value of -1 indicates that accuracy is not defined, as in the case of cartographic lines or the map neatline.

Spatial uncertainty in location of a feature, in meters.
