Ensuring interoperability among subject vocabularies and knowledge organization schemes: a methodological analysisChan, Lois Mais; Zeng, Marcia Lei (2002)The heterogeneous environment of information retrieval on the World Wide Web has brought recognition for the need of interoperability among diverse systems to the fore. In subject retrieval, users encounter not only different vocabularies and schemes but also different languages. As a result, there has been a flourish of projects in the last few years aimed at improving interoperability among subject vocabularies and knowledge organization schemes, with some targeting different vocabularies and others focusing on different languages. This paper attempts to analyze the methods used in these projects. It begins with a brief overview and then examines in particular the approaches and methods used in relevant efforts.

The Technical, Cataloging, and Evaluations Challenges at the NSDL All Projects Meeting brings together technical, cataloging, and evaluation experts to identify methods to determine the breadth and depth of the metadata repository. During this session we will develop a plan to characterize the contents of the NSDL Metadata Repository in terms of subject, audience, and type. Three position papers are presented as a prelude to the plan. They include: #1: Title: Report of the NSDL Evaluations Controlled Vocabulary Project Date: 10/1/2004 Committee Members Boots Cassel email@example.com Casey Jones firstname.lastname@example.org Mimi Recker email@example.com Judy Ridgway Jridgway@enc.org (Working Group Chair) Tammy Sumner sumner@Colorado.EDU # 2: Title: Metadata Elements in the NSDL Metadata Repository: Results of a Preliminary Quality Analysis: Subject, Type, Audience Authors: Gregory M.
