    • Kostiakov infiltration functions for level furrow design

      More efficient water application is generally achieved when the design parameters match actual field conditions. On four sites, Kostiakov infiltration functions were derived from cylinder and blocked furrow infiltrometers and SCS (Soil Conservation Service) intake families according to soil type. An infiltration function was also developed using a hydrodynamic computer model to adjust equation parameters to fit field data. Computer simulations of level furrow irrigation, using each Kostiakov infiltration function, were compared to actual field data. Excluding those functions fit to the field data, Kostiakov infiltration functions obtained from blocked furrow infiltrometers generally provided the most consistent input for level furrow irrigation design and evaluation.

    • L'Usage de Ressources Technologiques dans l'apprentissage du Français au Ghana

      Given technological advancements, studies (Knisely 2018 ; Pun, 2013 ; Mitchell, 2012 ; Clark & Gruba, 2010, Cetto, 2008 ; Furstenberg et al., 2001) show the great potential of technological resources in the optimization of the language-learning experience. This said, this project attempts to find out whether technological resources are exploited and optimized in tertiary institutions for the learning of French in Ghana. In the Ghanaian context, French is an important foreign language due to its membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS, a community dominated by francophone countries) and the fact that its neighboring countries are all francophone. Owing to this, French is a subject taught at almost all the levels of education in the country, although it is compulsory only at certain levels. However, some factors hinder the teaching and learning of French in Ghana. Considering the status of French and the factors that militates against its teaching and learning, our first aim is to find out whether French learners are aware of the technological resources that are available for enhancing their language learning. Secondly, we would like to find out what kind of technological resources they use, how they use them and finally, whether courses are structured to integrate technology. In order to get answers to these crucial questions, French students from all levels in the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Ghana Institute of Languages were asked to take an online survey. The thirty-two questions asked on the survey are related to materials used for French instruction in their institution, the kind of technological devices they own, their awareness and use of technological resources for French learning as well as the type of resources they would want their lecturers to include in the teaching of French. The result of our study shows that Ghanaian students who are aware of technological resources constitute the majority (N = 146, 73.36%) of students. The results also show that students use their Smartphones (N = 186, 77.17%) and the internet (N = 193, 93.24%) in their learning of French. Furthermore, the results show that they use these resources in fun ways such as listening to French music, listening to French audios, watching French films. Finally, the results indicate that lecturers integrate technological resources with audiovisuals (N = 190, 65.51%) being the most used and the internet (N = 103, 35.51%). being relatively less used. Based on the results of this survey and acknowledging that the restructuring of French programs could be a gradual process, we suggest that lecturers should integrate different technological resources in a coherent way in their teaching in order to make French teaching interesting, fun, attractive, varied and efficient for Ghanaian learners.
    • La Caravana de la Resistencia: Narratives of Survival and Displacement from LGBTQI Central American Asylum Seekers

      Using four stories from members of the first trans-gay caravan of Central American asylum seekers—nicknamed by supporters Arcoíris 17—this thesis analyzes gendered structural, legal and everyday violence in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua—where most of Arcoíris 17 members are from. This thesis evaluates the role of gendered violence in the displacement of LGBTQI communities. The experiences of Arcoíris 17 showed that this violence followed them north, into Mexico—where the caravan’s mobilization became even more dangerous, as the country increasingly violates the human rights of Central American asylum seekers, under the pretext of immigration enforcement. It was also in Mexico, where many of the caravan members were attacked by organized crime. Their final destination was the United States, where members of Arcoíris 17 applied for asylum, and subsequently were exposed to other forms of violence, as they were imprisoned in detention centers. However, these stories of vulnerabilities don’t define the lives of Arcoíris 17—a community with agency and in constant resistance against heteronormative, racist states and societies.
    • La carpa: A descriptive model for teaching history through drama in education

      This model proposes an approach for teaching history through drama in education. The program uses the framework of la carpa, a Mexican American theatrical tradition. Participants develop historical knowledge and skills of expression while they learn to use their own lives as a key to understanding the lives of others. In the past two decades in the U.S., drama teachers and youth project leaders have been employing social drama to encourage adolescents to express their fears, frustrations and experiences. As with the tradition of la carpa, the scripts reveal sentiments that may not be able to be spoken safely elsewhere. In contrast to the production of classic, scripted plays, social drama provides participants with the opportunity to create their own material using their own lives as primary resources. In addition to challenging participants aesthetically, the teaching model of la carpa fosters interpersonal development.

      En espanol la clausula reducida demuestra cierta libertad de orden de palabras entre el sujeto y el predicado lo cual no se presenta en ingles. Esto se ilustra en (i)--(iv): (i) Ella encontro el informe confuso. (ii) Ella encontro confuso el informe. (iii) She found the document confusing. (iv) *She found confusing the document. En espanol hay dos lecturas asociadas con (i), (1) Modificador adjetivo y (2) Predicacion secundaria, mientras que en ingles existe una sola; Predicacion secundaria. Tradicionalmente, la estructura en (i) se ha entendido como la estructura canonica tanto en ingles como en espanol de la cual se deriva (ii) (Stowell 1991, Franco 2000, Basilico). Este trabajo demuestra que tomando en cuenta estrategias discursivas como especificidad (Diesing 1992) y foco (Casielles Suarez 2001) la nocion que (i) es canonica se cuestiona. Esta observacion se refuerza tomando en cuenta restricciones fijas del ingles en cuanto a la asignacion de Caso acusativo.
    • La Coarticulación de Secuencias Vocálicas en el Español del Suroeste

      Esta tesis examina la acústica de secuencias vocálicas que ocurren entre dos palabras y experimentan contracción silábica en el español hablado en Tucson, Arizona. La tradición lingüística hispánica define este proceso con el término "sinalefa". Numerosas fuentes notan que la sinalefa hablada en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos tiene características diferentes de las documentadas para otros dialectos en España. Ocho mujeres tucsonenses realizaron una tarea de repetición del habla en que pronunciaron frases detres palabras en las cuales, en habla rápida, se espararía la aplicación de un proceso de sinalefa. El resultado del análisis de las grabaciones muestra una forma de habla que no ha sido descrita previamente en la cual aparece un proceso que llamamos "coarticulación asimilatoria progresiva".
    • La Distribución e Interpretación de los Sujetos Léxicos de Infinitivo en Español: Un Caso Problemático Para la Teoría del Caso

      El presente trabajo investiga los sujetos léxicos de oraciones de infinitivo que se encuentran en español (e.g., Los estudiantes se fueron sin saberlo LA MAESTRA). Estos sujetos presentan serios problemas para la Teoría del Caso de Principios y Parámetros (Chomsky, 1981, 1986, 1991) y teorías minimistas (Chomsky, 1995, 2000, 2001) puesto que predice que el único sujeto de una oración de infinitivo debe ser la categoría vacía PRO. No obstante, en esta tesis yo presento datos que nunca han sido analizados anteriormente y demuestro que dichos datos no son compatibles con las suposiciones de la teoría estándar, pero que ésta es problemática en sí y requiere un examen más detallado de la interacción entre sintaxis, morfología, fonología y contenido informativo. En cambio, presento un análisis que adopta los axiomas de la Morfología Distribuida y que explica de manera adecuada los datos en cuestión.

      Cette thèse porte sur la fictionalisation du réel et la manière dont on ne peut empêcher la fiction de s’insérer dans les œuvres dites (auto)biographiques dans Moi Tituba, Sorcière Noire de Salem de Maryse Condé, L’Amant de Duras et L’Adversaire d’Emmanuel Carrère. Le premier chapitre se focalise sur la définition des termes techniques qui seront utilisés tout au long du papier, en s’appuyant sur les propos des critiques. Les trois chapitres suivants analysent les trois œuvres et la manière dont la fiction s’insère dans les œuvres ainsi que la manière dont les écrivains utilisent la fiction et joue avec cette frontière si floue.

    • La Lucha Por Un Espacio: Guatemalan Journalists Fighting Against Censorship and Violence

      Hundreds of journalists took to the streets in different parts of Guatemala to protest attacks against their colleagues and infringements on their freedom of expression in the country, during the second week of March in 2015. The larger protests were held in Guatemala City and in Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez, where earlier that week at slightly past noon three reporters were gunned down at a park in front of a municipality building; one survived the attack. Three days later a cameraman was shot dead by men on motorcycles, in front of the television station he worked for in Chicacao, Suchitepéquez. This is the perpetual cycle of violence that has been inculcated into the daily lives of the people in the country - it's a cultural construct that's oozed into the depths of society and sadly into the profession of journalism. This thesis is a study that investigates how Guatemalan journalists live and work in the country under a constant threat of violence, fighting for their space as a respected profession in a society that could benefit from a functioning media system. The in-depth interviews with reporters in the country will allow for a first-hand interpretation to support the research already conducted in the literature review. The study is a furthered analysis of literature and interviews to better understand why the state of journalism in Guatemala is complex, and why it is imperative for journalists to continue fighting for their space.
    • La mancha del platano: The effect of language policyon Puerto Rican national identity in the 1940s

      The present work seeks to identity possible sources of the persistent link between the Spanish language and national identity in Puerto Rico. By examining mass media discourse in the 1940s as a turbulent period of language policy conflict between the Island and the U.S. federal government, I suggest that the federal imposition of language policy without the consent or approval of local politicians or educators was influential in the construction of national identity that included language as a major defining factor. Local elites reacted to the colonial hegemony by defining Puerto Rican identity in opposition to American identity. The construction of identity in 1940s is characterized by a cultural conception of nation that redefined national symbols (such as language) in social rather than political terms in order to avoid disturbing the existing colonial hegemony.
