ABOUT THE COLLECTION

The University of Arizona Yearbook was first published in 1903 under the title the Burro and was dedicated to “the students and faculty of University of Arizona and to all those who have lived and loved a college life”. The yearbooks would see four title changes throughout its history: The Burro (1903), University Life (1910), El Sahuaro (1913), and The Desert (1911; 1914-1997; 2003). Yearbooks from 1906-1908 were published as part of a special issue of the student publication University of Arizona Monthly.

Along with many title changes, the yearbooks experienced a number of gaps in publication. The first two gaps in publication occurred early on in 1910, 1912. The longest gap in production of the yearbook occurred from 1998 to 2003, due to lack of interest from the student body. In 1997, 934 copies were produced for 33,737 students enrolled at the University of Arizona. The Desert yearbook came back for its final appearance in 2005.

The yearbooks represented in this digital collection were scanned from original copies housed in University of Arizona Libraries, Special Collections. Not all years are presented in the collection due to either gaps in publication, or gaps in holdings. Print copies of the yearbooks are available for viewing in University of Arizona Libraries, Special Collections under the call number: LD198.7.D4. View the UA Library Catalog record for specific print holdings.
