This dissertation studies the lyric poetry of four Mexican exiles in the Southwestern United States during 1900-1920. It offers an approach for examining the poetry of Mexican exiles. Using the scheme "espacio poetico-ideologico" (poetic-ideological space) it examines the works of Enrique Flores Magon, Miguel Bolanos Cacho, Julio Arce, and Martin Solis. The dissertation argues that each of the four poets creates a different "espacio poetico-ideologico" at the intersection of the Mexican and American realities. While Enrique Flores Magon and Miguel Bolanos Cacho construct a "espacio poetico-ideologico" more influenced by the mainland Mexican reality; Julio Arce and Martin Solis are more influenced by that of the Mexican-American community in the Southwest. This dissertation also argues that Enrique Flores Magon and Miguel Bolanos Cacho were capable of creating a discourse independent of the dominant hegemonic culture of Mexico, and that Julio Arce and Martin Solis were the ones that started the Mexican-American poetic discourse of the twentieth century. This dissertation also offers a rudimentary classificatory system for analyzing Mexican marginal literature. The materials used for this study include various works of the four authors: books, articles, and poems which appeared in newspapers of the period. In addition, the analysis is supplemented with works by their contemporaries and embedded in a discussion which makes reference to more recent theories of literature and ideology.Type
