A physically based description of the standard API-type rainfall-runoff model is presented. Enhancements developed by the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center (NWS MARFC) are also discussed. Alterations are made to some of these enhancements to provide a more realistic definition of the rainfall-runoff process. Equations are introduced to replace the interpolating schemes which describe the 19 regional season quadrants in the current version of the MARFC API model. A direct-search optimization routine known as pattern search is used to adjust the parameters in these equations. It is shown that the performance of the MARFC API model can be enhanced through the use of this routine, provided that the initial parameter values are relatively close to the final optimum.Type
