The writing and reading of 3 level run-length-limited (RLL) modulation signals on optical discs having active (recording) layers comprised of different phase change materials is discussed. These recordings represent a linear storage density enhancement of 50% Vs conventional (2-level) RLL modulation. Thermal simulations of the mark writing process provide a tool that can be used to optimize write strategies for ML-RLL recording.Type
