| dc.description.abstract | The primary aim of this thesis is to investigate and elucidate the octave interval and fourth interval structures which comprise the macro "infrastructure" of Hellenistic theory and to investigate the mechanical relationship which existed between the ancient Hellenistic musical instruments and such theoretical structures. Regarding the first aim, I shall attempt to integrate the evidence from the sources into a cohesive framework. Regarding the second aim, I shall work with what I conceive to be interpretable as theoretical evidence of practical instrumentation. | |
