The purpose of this research was to explore the inner workings of El Sistema-inspired programs in the United States. The mission of the El Sistema program is to support social change through music. The central focus of this research is the social change aspect of the program. This project took place over the period of a year and involved week-long visits at three geographically different locations in the United States. To collect data, I observed lessons, sectionals, and rehearsals in addition to conducting interviews with members of the administration and staff. This research found that through fostering individual growth among the students by developing strong student to teacher relationships, the programs make a positive impact on social change.Type
