AbstractConcepts for a highly automated spacecraft, which is much more independent of ground operations than current spacecraft, have been investigated. Applicable systems and technology requirements are identified for maximum onboard automation of mission functions. A spacecraft concept which requires infrequent ground contact while increasing mission effectiveness is described. The potential impact of such a system on end-to-end system design is discussed.
