Bell Laboratories is actively involved in applied research work on single mode long wavelength technology which might lead to a development program for optical undersea transatlantic communication systems. This talk addresses the economic justification for optical transatlantic systems, and describes projected system parameters for a first system targeted for service in the year 1988. The current state of technology of major system elements is described, and projections are made for future generation optical undersea systems.Sponsors
