AbstractThe following thesis is a reflection on the experience of the 2017 Chartered Financial Analyst Research Institute Challenge hosted by the Phoenix CFA Society. The main objective of this challenge is to allow students to showcase their learned financial knowledge, valuation skills, and knowledge of industry research in the form of a written equity research report on a given company. This thesis details the specifications of the challenge, the process of completing the challenge, and a reflection on the successes and failures of the challenge. The Appendix includes the final report that was presented to the judges for the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. The company that we were assigned to write a report on was Western Alliance Bancorporation. Concluding the report, we placed a sell rating on Western Alliance Bancorporation with a target price of $41.36 with the implication that the bank was overvalued at the time.
