In this thesis, the emerging role of the psychiatric/ mental health nurse practitioner in Arizona was studied by the use of a descriptive survey. The responses to a 37-question survey returned by 16 nurse practitioners currently practicing in this role in Arizona were analyzed and data tabulated. The areas addressed included role functions, populations served, practice settings, salary ranges, treatment modalities most commonly used, perceived adequacy of educational programs attended, and identified barriers to practice. A literature review provides an historical perspective of the roles of the psychiatric/ mental health nurse and the nurse practitioner. Current health care policies affecting these roles were identified. Recommendations for future research are presented.en_US
