Evaluation of an oral health class for sheltered school-aged children

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate an oral health class for sheltered school aged children. The classes were conducted at two local homeless shelters. Twelve children in the age range of five to ten agreed to participate in this study. The children's knowledge and behaviors were evaluated in a pre-test/post-test format. The instruments used for evaluation were titled, Behavior Checklist on Oral Health for School-aged Children and Healthy Smile Worksheet. The results of this study indicated that the oral health class was effective. The children's oral health behaviors significantly improved following the class (Z = -3.02, P = .003). In addition, there was a significant improvement in the children's oral health knowledge following the class (Z = -2.53, P = .011). The findings of this study support the benefits of an oral health class for sheltered children, while reinforcing the need for future classes.
