| dc.description | Water is becoming a more and more controversial subject in Arizona. The problem stems from the fact that the amount of water consumed far exceeds the ability of nature to replace it. In order to meet growing agricultural, industrial, mining and municipal demands, water is being mined from groundwater reservoirs at alarming rates. Statistics presented in Phase I of the Arizona State Water Plan recently released by the Arizona Water Commission indicate that for Arizona, taken as a whole, water is being withdrawn from groundwater storage at 1. 7 times the rate at which it is being replaced by natural recharge. In Pima County, where essentially all water consumed is drawn from the groundwater supply, the depletion rate is 4.7 times the recharge rate. Such depletion of the groundwater supply cannot go on indefinitely. Alternatives must be found and implemented to narrow the widening gap between water use and water recharge. | |
