This paper comprises the design of a survey to evaluate the language usage of Syrian refugees resettled in the U.S., and a report on the pilot test of that instrument. The demographics of the study population are described, followed by a discussion of literature concerning language maintenance and language shift, and how that literature applies to Syrian refugees. This is followed by the rationale for the survey design and the methods, results, and discussion of the pilot test. Finally, necessary steps for a full-scale implementation of the survey instrument are discussed.Type
