AbstractPrior usability assessment research has paid little attention to how product and feature ratings are influenced by the evaluation context. However, the evaluability hypothesis, which guides this research, suggests that the evaluation context is a vital factor in shaping user's assessments and perceptions about technology features. pecifically, the evaluability hypothesis proposes that technology feature perceptions, and ultimately technology choices, will change when evaluating a single technology in isolation versus when simultaneously comparing more than one. To demonstrate the evaluability hypothesis effect in the context of consumer technology product evaluations, two experiments were conducted. Both studies support the evaluability hypothesis effect, showing that when two IT products are compared, hard-to-evaluate but easy-to-compare features are perceived to be more important and therefore have a larger influence on product preferences. Alternatively, when evaluating a single product in isolation, easy-to-evaluate features are perceived to be more important and therefore have a larger influence on product preferences. Consequently, different product preferences emerge (i.e., preference reversals) in different evaluation contexts. The results demonstrate that this theoretical lens is robust to the technology evaluation context, providing important theoretical and practical insights for technology design, usability assessments, and, ultimately, product acceptance.

The Well of the Past: How Experience with Problems While Using Prior Technologies Affects the Adoption of New TechnologiesBroschak, Joseph P.; Paik, Eugene Taeha; Leahey, Erin; Schilke, Oliver (The University of Arizona., 2018)This dissertation questions how organizations’ experience with problems while using prior technologies affects the adoption of new technologies. It develops and tests a model of technology adoption that takes into account three factors – characteristics of organizations, technologies, and the environment. Drawing on organizational learning theory, this dissertation makes four general predictions. First, focal organizations’ direct experience with problems while using prior technologies increases the likelihood of adopting new technologies. Second, focal organizations’ indirect experience with problems through their production network partners increases their likelihood of adopting new technologies and strengthens the relationship between direct experience and technology adoption. Third, the relationship between learning from direct and indirect experiences and technology adoption is stronger for a new technology developed inside the industry than for that developed outside the industry. Lastly, organizations’ social relationships with production network partners, which are influenced by both types of learning, affect the likelihood of adopting new technologies. I test these predictions in the context of the music recording industry, using a longitudinal dataset of records released in the U.S. music recording industry between 1962 and 2005. Five on-line metadata servers provide detailed information on records, record labels, artists, and other participants in record production. I discuss the implications of my findings for organizational learning theory, social network perspective, and the literature on technological change.
Attachment, Self-disclosure, and New Technologies: Investigating the Connection between Attachment and Self-Disclosure Across Different Communication TechnologiesRains, Stephen A.; Brunner, Steven R.; Segrin, Chris; Curran, Melissa; Rains, Stephen A. (The University of Arizona., 2015)The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the connection between attachment and self-disclosure behavior across communication technologies. Very little research has explored the connection between attachment and self-disclosure, and no studies have examined the relationship in the context of communication technologies. Drawing on attachment theory, self-disclosure literature, and communication technology research, this dissertation predicted that individuals with high anxious or high avoidance attachment would capitalize on the affordances of communication technologies and be associated with more self-disclosure behavior. Two studies were completed to test these hypotheses. Study one (n = 479) was a cross-sectional survey using participants recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Study two (n = 309) was an experiment where participants had their attachment system activated by experiencing a threatening situation hypothetically. Both studies had participants report self-disclosure behavior with their romantic partner in frequency and degree of intimacy. Each participant was randomly assigned one communication channel to report on (e.g., face-to-face, text messaging, email, or social networking sites). The results from the two studies provided mixed results for attachment and self-disclosure behavior across communication technologies. In general, anxious attachment was positively associated with self-disclosure frequency and degree of intimacy regardless of which channel was used, which was expected. Avoidance attachment was negatively associated with self-disclosure frequency, but only when the participant was experiencing a threatening situation. Neither attachment style interacted with the number of cues perceived to be available in a communication channel in the proposed direction when predicting self-disclosure behavior. However, both attachment dimensions interacted with a channel’s perceived expectation for response when predicting self-disclosure intimacy. When participants were not experiencing a threat to their security, those with high anxious or high avoidance attachment reported self-disclosing more intimately in channels perceived to have less expectation for response. Together these findings suggest individuals with high anxious attachment may use self-disclosure as a hyperactivating strategy to connect with an attachment figure. Individuals with high avoidance attachment choose not to self-disclose as a deactivating strategy that prevents intimacy from forming. Additionally, individuals with high anxious or high avoidance attachment can capitalize on a channel’s expectation for response and feel comfortable self-disclosing something intimate in a channel perceived to have a low expectation for response.
Can Mobile Communication Technologies Enhance Knowledge and Technology Transfer for Improved Agricultural Productivity in Developing Nations? A Preliminary Macro-Economic Assessment in KenyaVancel, James Hugh (The University of Arizona., 2012-05)Agriculture is central to the economy of Kenya, but as the population dependent on the same land grows, farmers have been compelled to develop more intensive practices to produce similar yields as in the past. Investments in agricultural research and technology facilitate this intensification and have historically resulted in substantial gains. However, efforts to promote effective transfer of new technologies and methodologies have been stifled by financial challenges to traditional agricultural extension delivery approaches. Extension services involve significant face-to-face contact in farmer fields, through farmer field schools, or at regional events. However with rising costs, the demand for more mobile and adaptable mediums is apparent. This study examines the potential for new methods of knowledge and technology transfer and diffusion of innovation within Kenya, most notably the use of mobile phone services. In order to frame the potential of such services, a national level macro-econometric analysis was undertaken to assess the effects of investments in agricultural research on agricultural gross domestic product. These results were then overlaid on an analysis of 14 case studies examining the effects and challenges of agricultural extension in East Africa. Three potential services, Awaaz De, FarmFox, and Community Knowledge Workers (CKW), were then assessed on a capabilities standard in the context of the rise of the mobile communication markets in Kenya for potential application to extension services. The results indicate that agricultural research is strongly correlated with growth in agricultural GDP and that effective extension services have strongly facilitated that in the past. However, limited flexibility, lack of farmer input, and high costs limit that potential contribution to growth. Mobile communication services may be part of the solution; capabilities of Awaaz De, FarmFox, and CKW are promising, but further research is needed to accurately recommend a service for Kenya’s extension services.
