AbstractCulture, as the fifth language skill, enables learners to develop into multilingually and multiculturally aware global citizens. The traditional Chinese architecture is as old as Chinese civilization. The wisdom, stories, and cultural elements behind traditional Chinese construction is a valued aspect of Chinese culture. This article introduces a LiveCode based mobile application featuring a virtual tour of two traditional Chinese architecture sites Nan Yuan and Humble Administrator's Garden. The application is designed by the author for advanced Chinese learners for an immersive linguacultural learning experience. Built-in tools, rollover hints, authentic multimedia resources and useful links of the application effectively integrate culture with language learning. Pedagogical applications, pilot outcomes, implications, and future directions of mobile learning and place-based learning in Chinese linguacultural education are also addressed in this paper.

Classroom discourse communicative competency of bilingual students with learning disabilities during content learning in three learning environments.Reyes, Elba Iris; Bos, Candace S.; Antia, Shirin D.; Nahmias, Maria (The University of Arizona., 1994)Using language as a tool to engage in social activity and mediate learning is a human experience. For some, that experience is limited as a result of language/learning problems or by experiences in environments that have not fostered language development. Language minority students who have learning disabilities are also challenged to create meaning in a language that is not native and that may be limited, particularly as it relates to academic learning. This study examined the influence of three learning environments on the communicative competencies of bilingual students with learning disabilities and the influence of those environments on the students' learning. Students were at least two years below expected grade level in reading. During the study, they used their grade level textbooks as they engaged in learning Social Studies content. Results indicate that dialogic, interactive learning environments influence the communicative competencies students demonstrate as well as their content learning.
ASSOCIATIVE LEARNING IN ANTS: ODOR LEARNING VS. COLOR LEARNING IN NOVOMESSOR COCKERELLIGronenberg, Wulfila; Sobol, Sky Harris (The University of Arizona., 2016)Associative learning is a form of learning where an animal learns to associate a stimulus with a behavioral response. Associative learning has been generated in the laboratory for many species, including insects, by using classical conditioning. Previous experiments show that ants can learn to associate odors and colors with a sugar reward. When ants are trained to associate a stimulus with a sugar reward, they exhibit the proboscis extension response (PER) to the stimulus alone, but it was unknown whether ants are better at color association or odor association. In order to test this, two separate experiments were undertaken. The first used classical conditioning to train ants to associate a sucrose solution with an odor. The second used classical conditioning to train two groups of ants. The first group was trained to associate a sucrose solution with a blue light. The second group was trained to associate a sucrose solution with a green light. For both experiments a significant percentage of ants demonstrated learning by exhibiting PER when presented solely with the odor or light. There was, however, no significant difference between the percentages of ants that demonstrated learning from the blue light, the green light, or the odor.
Learning To Learn: A Look Into the Collaborative Learning SpaceCohen, Zoe; Saeed, Sabina (The University of Arizona., 2017)The Collaborative Learning Space is a recent addition to the University of Arizona that helps students engage in active learning. Prior to the incorporation of the CLS, courses were primarily taught in a lecture based format. After receiving a grant, the University of Arizona decided to use the money to develop new types of leaning spaces and classrooms to increase student engagement and active learning. These classrooms are not only effective for the students, but also they make a huge impact on the faculty. For my honors senior thesis, I worked with Dr. Cohen to get a closer look at how we learn and what learning is like in the CLS. We investigated what types of learning and teaching styles are used in the CLS, and how students and professors view this new space in comparison to a regular lecture based classroom. We also explored the literature on how active learning impacts students learning. Overall the teacher and student satisfaction with the new learning spaces was seen to be very high, and active learning was found to show improvements in different areas including information retention, critical thinking, study habits, student attitude, and problem-solving skills.
