“With this issue of The Archive we are pleased to present a second volume of the Center's research series devoted to the works of W. Eugene Smith. In 1980, issue number 12 was devoted to the early work of Smith, encompassing the years 1939 to 1951. The current publication continues the critical exploration of Smith's aesthetic and historical contributions to photography by scholar and historian William Johnson, who also authored The Archive, Number 12.
