The AUM is a useful tool to range managers if properly defined and applied. A proposal is made that an animal unit be defined as a 1,000 lb dry cow in maintenance or gestation, or its equivalent. It is also proposed that 540 therms of digestible energy (equivalent to 270 lb of TDN) be used for converting dry roughages, silages, and grains to AUM's.Type
