Depression is one of the leading causes of disability experienced by individuals in the United States. Given the limited outward symptoms and social stigma that accompanies mental disorders, many individuals afflicted with this mood disorder either do not seek out medical attention or cannot find treatments that adequately relieve their symptoms. This thesis seeks to identify best-practice guidelines for utilizing physical activity to alleviate symptoms of depression. After synthesizing the existing research, the connection between engagement in physical activity and a reduction in depressive symptoms surfaced. Through analysis of the various studies, the most effective modalities, frequencies, and intensities of physical activity have been identified. An exploration of the barriers and facilitators to engagement in physical activity suggests the importance of education and professional guidance in maintaining activity levels and reaching treatment goals among this population. The final chapter of this thesis includes a hypothetical group exercise program that could be implemented via community partnerships with recreational facilities to promote the utilization of physical activity as a complementary therapy for patients with depression. Although not actually conducted, this thesis provides plans for a 12-week pilot study of the suggested exercise program that includes recruitment and evaluation methodology.Type
