Sleep is a complex and required physiological process that is important for the health and function of a person. Disturbances in sleep have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, yet it is unknown through what mechanism insomnia may be playing a role in this pathology. Recently, there has been emphasis in the field implicating disrupted metabolite clearance during slow wave sleep (SWS) in neurodegenerative diseases. However, the context of inflammation, specifically the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6, a known mediator of sleepiness, may provide important insight into sleep’s role in neurodegenerative diseases.Type
