dc.description.abstract | This doctoral capstone project examines two compositions: the Sonata for Solo Viola, op. 11, no. 5, by Paul Hindemith and Partita II for Unaccompanied Violin (BWV 1004) by Johann Sebastian Bach. Despite being composed two centuries apart, both works share similar elements in texture and rhythmic motive. A targeted analysis comparing the use of polyphonic texture and the Sarabande dance rhythm within select movements of Partita II will provide violists with a fundamental understanding and interpretation of similar sections found in Hindemith’s op. 11, no. 5.A component of this project also includes a professionally recorded and produced album that contains both pieces, in addition to a detailed procedure of recording an album from pre-production to post-production. The outlined procedure includes a marketing survey, a brief understanding of copyright laws as it pertains to recording, location choices, equipment basics, and microphone techniques. This project will provide a new perspective to listeners, serve as a valuable educational resource for viola students, and hopefully inspire others to learn more about recording techniques. | |
