The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is investigating the deployment of space-based environmental monitoring with the help of small satellites. The NOAA Data Collection System currently monitors environmental telemetry from approximately 31,000 terrestrial Data Collection Platform (DCP) locations in the western hemisphere. In the summer of 2020, NOAA deployed a DCP in low earth orbit (LEO) and it transmitted test data through the GOES satellites in geostationary orbit. This space-based DCP was a hosted payload on the NASA-sponsored small satellite, TECHEDSAT 10. The satellite was transported to the International Space Station in February 2020 and launched in July 2020.Type
