This thesis explores the complex notions of identity and self-expression of young German 20somethings through the lens of popular contemporary music. German identity and defining what it means to be German is fraught with a complex, and often shameful, history. Music plays a significant role in identity, serving as a political and cultural phenomenon throughout time. Musical tradition in the German-speaking world has historically served as a relatively safe means of expressing German identity, with many scholars defining German music as possessing some sort of “intrinsic uniqueness”. Despite this historical musical context, contemporary German identities cannot be easily and monolithically defined. This current generation’s sense of identity is as complex and diverse as Germany’s ever-changing demographics, and contemporary artists represent this diversity. This thesis analyzes select works of two up-and-coming musicians, Apache 207 and Provinz, and evaluates how they speak to the values and identity of this generation, which combines the retro vibes of a time before they were born with contemporary social commentary and activism, evoking a sense of longing that seems both timeless and specifically “German.”Type
