This thesis investigates the multifaceted narratological functions of banquet verses within the context of Honglou meng, a classic Chinese novel by Cao Xueqin. By examining a selection of banquets and their respective verses, the study explores the ways in which these banquet verses contribute to the novel's overarching narrative framework and plot progression. Three principal functions are identified and analyzed: allegorical foreshadowing, catalytic instigation, and focalization. The thesis comprises three chapters, each addressing a specific narrative function and one or two case studies, in order to elucidate the significance and role of banquet verses in relation to the novel's broader themes and messages. By engaging in a tiered interpretive relationship, this study reveals how the novel, the banquets, and the banquet verses form a progressively deepening structure of meaning-making. In doing so, it demonstrates the profound significance of banquet verses in deciphering the novel's enigmatic "flavors" and showcasing the literary craftsmanship of Honglou meng. Ultimately, this thesis offers an innovative perspective on the gastronomic depictions within the novel and contributes to the understanding of the intricate narrative and poetic elements that underpin this esteemed work of Chinese literature.Type
