In a time of fear, uncertainty, and loss, it was easy to forget that everyone had a unique experience during the spring of 2020 – and with it came a plethora of stories left untold. I created an art exhibit that reflected my findings after investigating how people in different stages of their lives handled COVID lockdown. I began this project in June of 2022 after vigorous planning with my advisor, Patrick Baliani. It started with a self-portrait, using my personal story as muse. I then moved on to those beyond myself. I conducted interviews with three individuals: one my age – a high school senior at the time of lockdown, one in college at the time of lockdown, and one in middle age beyond academics. I listened to and recorded their recollections of that fateful spring two years ago. I transcribed the audio files of the ~20 minute interviews and highlighted points they made that I felt summarized their experiences overall. Professor Baliani and I transformed the dissected transcripts into prose poems, all structured uniquely to reflect their individuality during that time, but all with a sense of consistency. I edited the audios of the interviews to reflect the poems, making it sound like the participants were reading the poems aloud. These audios were uploaded to YouTube with a designated QR code provided in the exhibition to enable the viewer to access them. To accompany this, I created a triptych of art pieces customized to each interviewee. Each piece had a specialized likeness to the participant it represented, but they all contained consistent elements to remain cohesive. This exhibit was displayed at the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center from April 14th – April 25th, 2023.
