Purpose: The purpose of this Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to assess for any negative symptoms, unmet needs or psychological distress reported by informal caregivers to those with cancer. Background: Cancer negatively affects millions of Americans each year and often family or friends step into an informal caregiver role, serving a vital function in the healthcare team. Caregiving can have a negative impact leading to increased physical, mental and emotional issues. Because a reciprocal relationship exists between the caregiver and the cancer patient, it’s important to assess and meet the needs of informal caregivers to ensure optimal care and wellbeing. Methods: A qualitative approach was utilized, specifically content analysis of five de-identified baseline interview sessions of cancer caregivers transcribed from a parent study that were conducted between 2018-2022. Results: Four out of the five caregivers listed at least one negative symptom. Thirteen codes in total were summarized within two themes: ‘unmet needs’ and ‘psychological distress.’ Five codes emerged related to ‘unmet needs’ related to ‘lack.’ Eight codes emerged related to ‘psychological distress.’ The codes identified were in line with previous research. Conclusions: Informal caregivers to those with cancer are an essential part of the health care team. By making the caregiver a priority, meeting their needs and addressing mental health concerns, both the caregiver and the cancer patient benefit.Type
