The art and technique of directing instrumental and vocal ensembles has evolved tremendously in the past four centuries, giving twenty-first century pianist-conductors significantly more tools and information to work with. It is not enough to merely lead instinctively or beat the time when directing from the keyboard, but it is necessary to be well-versed in conducting gestures and rehearsal techniques, as well as to have a basic understanding of the features and abilities of each instrument in the ensemble. This document explores the skills all pianist-conductors should develop to be effective in their performances.Type
