Lepton and baryon numbers are accidental symmetries in the effective field theory (EFT) of the Standard Model. Their violation would lead to spectacular nuclear decays which can be described with nuclear EFTs. I discuss ways in which two such decays - the neutrinoless double-beta decay of heavy nuclei and the disappearance of the deuteron - provide complementary information to processes that take place outside the nuclear environment - neutrino masses, nucleon decay, and neutron-antineutron oscillations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
