    Description
This map depicts areas with potential aggregate resources in the greater Tucson metropolitan area and the upper Santa Cruz Valley south to Nogales. It is derived from two 1:100,000-scale geologic maps developed and released over the past several years (Pearthree et al., 2024; Pearthree, 2025). The primary purpose of this map is to identify and highlight the surficial geologic map units that have been or currently are sources of aggregate. Thus, the map provides a general assessment of where additional aggregate resources might be obtained, as well as areas that might have been sources of aggregate if they had not already been developed. This information may be useful to companies that produce aggregate, but its primary purpose is to assist local governments in considering potential aggregate resources when planning for future growth. The map area is entirely within the watershed of the north-flowing Santa Cruz River and its principal tributaries. It covers the entire Tucson metropolitan area and some outlying areas, as well as the entire upper Santa Cruz Valley south to the International Border at Nogales. The map depicts the distribution of surficial and basin deposits in some detail. By the unit organization and color scheme, the map emphasizes the units deposited by the largest fluvial systems in the region that have been or currently are sources of aggregate resources. All aggregate pits that could be detected in modern aerial imagery available through ArcGIS were mapped. All bedrock within the map area is grouped in one unit. The general conclusions of the assessment are that extensive areas covered by the map that have aggregate potential. Much of the central Tucson urban area has been built on such deposits; of course, these areas will not be mined for aggregate resources in the foreseeable future. Fortunately, there are broad areas on the margins of the Tucson area that have similar deposits and have not been covered by development. This is particularly true on the southern and southeastern margins of the Tucson area. Farther south in upper Santa Cruz Valley, areas of potential aggregate resources are much more limited in extent. This geologic map was funded in part by the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geological Mapping Program under STATEMAP award G23AC00556.
