This document focuses on the orchestral composition Suite Ecuador by Gerardo Guevara(1930–2024), a central work in his oeuvre and a significant example of Ecuadorian musical nationalism. While Guevara’s orchestral pieces remain largely underexplored, Suite Ecuador stands as a prime example of his ability to merge Ecuadorian folk music with European and avant-garde influences. Composed between 1972 and 1974, it showcases Guevara’s approach to intertwining national identity, historical narratives, and cultural elements in his music. In addition to a comprehensive analysis of Suite Ecuador, this study includes comparative examinations of two other works by Guevara: “El espantapájaros” and Divertimento para cuerdas no. 1, both of which highlight Guevara’s integration of popular genres into his sophisticated compositional style. The research also situates Guevara within the broader context of Ecuadorian music, addressing both traditional and classical music, with a particular focus on key musical genres, folk instruments, and the lasting impact of cultural practices introduced during Spanish colonization. Moreover, this study examines Guevara’s contributions alongside those of other composers who have shaped the trajectory of Ecuadorian musical nationalism. By recognizing Guevara as a prominent nationalistic composer, this document seeks to underscore his pivotal role in reflecting the complex cultural identity of Ecuador through his music. The analysis of his works contributes to the understanding of Guevara’s legacy and provides a foundation for future exploration and performance of his music.Type
